On September 30, 2005 three WEMA members returned from a 16-day EMAC (Emergency Management Assistance Compact) deployment to assist the State of Mississippi with the Hurricane Katrina effort.  Steve Braun (read bio), Grant County Emergency Management Director; Nancy Crowley (read bio), Manitowoc County Emergency Management Director; and Mike Ciardo (read bio), City of Whitewater Emergency Management Director were assigned to the southern two tiers of Mississippi counties along the Gulf of Mexico.  This operational branch included the cities of Biloxi, Gulfport, Waveland, Bay St. Louis, Ocean Springs, Pearl River, Wiggins, Lucedale and Pascagoula.  Working for the Mississippi State Emergency Management Agency (MEMA), the three were assigned to FEMA's community relations field section, where they provided affected residents and communities with information about federal and other emergency relief available, and served as the "eyes and ears" of FEMA in southern Mississippi.
